I have an English degree. The Inn I'm applying to is asking me for my GCSE English certificate... Crikey, there's a distinct question as to whether or not I even know where that is after all this time. It's hardly my last qual!!
In fact, as I think about it, I recall that it may have had an incident with the all-in-one fax/printer/scanner/photocopier a while back...
And don't even get me started on all the things required to rent a flat. Has the whole world gone paperwork mad?

Surely your Inn can work out that, with a degree in English, to ask for a GCSE in the subject is ludicrous? Oh dear! Perhaps if you were to politely point this out?
As for flats - a close friend of mine recently was able to purchase property. I saw with amusement the vast paperwork through which he must wade, and was subjected to him bemoaning the arrival of new packages demanding signatures almost daily! I do not envy him one bit!
Sending your transcript of your degree is usually enough :)
All the inns will ask for proof of a basic qualification in English - even if you have a stellar qualification such as a degree in the subject - since for the vast majority it goes some way to providing proof that we have at least some command of the tools of the trade!
( paperwork=law=get used to it, unfortunately!)
It's not like I didn't get that, Law Minx. :P Just makes me sigh (particularly as the managing editor emerita of an academic journal!!)...
Odysseus, I dread the day when I have to BUY somewhere... that's getting way too ahead of myself!
( The inns are always into stating the bleedin obvious, unfortunately. One day they will grow up and into the 21st century along with the rest of us in this respect!)
